title sequence introduction.

A title sequence is the method by which cinematic films or t.v programmes present their title ,key production and cast members or both unitiziling conceptual visuals and sound. The opening title sequence of a film is that certain films opportunity to make a good impression on the veiwer.A well crafted title sequence introduces the audience to the tone and theme of the film or programme.

The codes and conventions of a good title sequence invloves
  • Detail of cast and crew
  • the films title
  • An introduction to characters or character type
  • Indication of place and settings
  • indication to historical period
  • information regarding mood and tone
  • information on genre
  • Questions that the veiwer finds intriguing ( sets up enigma)
  • patterns and types of editing that will be echoed in the remainder of the film
  • mise en scene and cinematography that will be echoed or elaborated upon later in the film.
Kyle cooper created the title sequence for director David Fihersiqas film, seven.

The genre of the film is constructed by the use of music, The sounds and images. The sound of screams and a noise like disc scratching makes the audience feel uncomfortable giving them a sense that the genre is a thriller.

Zombie land title analysis.

Right at the begining of the titles you can tell its going to be an action thriller, you can tell this by the use of slow motion and the hard music. The slow motion also tells the veiwer the genre and indicates that its going to be quite comic as it amplifies the expressions on the characters faces which makes it fairly humorous. The bold harshly edged red typography also indicates the genre as the colour red shows danger, death and blood and it combines well with the low key lighting as it stands out well drawing attraction to it, Also they have fixed the typography into the video giving it sense that it is part of the scene.

The Harsh metal music  is placed to make the veiwer feel uncomfortable and it builds tesion as it is fast but the actual video is slow motion, ithe music forshadows the events that are to come in the film,There is also the sound of a bell that you hear on grand father clocks, this could indicate that time is running out for the human race and the zombies are taking over. During the clips there is a nude woman , this mocks the horror genre because it is very comical and slightly rude and comical, The colour purple shown in the background blends well with the woman as it is the classical colour of an rich american guy/ pimp and it shows weatlth and the sexuality of the nude woman and shows she is a stripper as she has money tucked in to her underwear.

There is a title which is smashed by the man , this indicates distruction and danger to the audience which builds tension , even though the humans are running it makes the audience wonder if they will fight back and destroy the zombies , this is also shown by the clip of the man with the gun shooting at the zombies. The moment where the firemen are running from the zombies show that even though they're meant to be tough and their job is to help people in danger , this shows that even they are scared which  shows if they are , everyone should be scared and noone can help.

Saul Bass case study.

Saul Bass was a very famous title sequence designer, he was born in 1920  and then died in 1996 as the age of 75. Bass' was known for his use of simple geometric shapes and their symbolism often as a single dominant image stands alone to deliver a powerful message. He also had an amazing ability to capture the filnms tone and mood using these simple images , this was instead of using a boring image of a film star.Bass' studied at the art students league in new york, after apprentiships he worked as a free lance graphic designer or commercial artist/graphic designer, Bass' then went on to open his very own studio.

Otto Preminger invited him to design the poster for his movie " Carmen Jones" Preminger' was so impressed with the result of the poster he then asked him to design the title sequence for it.

Saul Bass designed title sequences for films such as;
  • Carmen Jones, 1954
  • Vertigo, 1958
  • Anatomy of a murder , 1959
  • North by Northwest, 1959
  • Psycho, 1960
  • West side story, 1960
  • Bunny lake is missing, 1965
  • Cape fear , 1991.
Saul Bass makes the genre of the film very clear during his design's of the title sequence but also makes the characters seem very mysterious and sly as he uses block colours and bold shapes and sillohettes.

Continuity Excersise .dv

This is mine and Sophie's continuity video.

Continuity is where characteristis, objects, camera angles and settings are the same and consistant throughout the video. these aspects cannot change throughout the videos cuts on order for it to make sense to the veiwer. I think we did ok with the task as we have defantly tried to avoid contiuity mistakes and it is visible but there are some visible mistakes that you can see within this clip.We used camera angles such as over tge shoulder shots, medium shots, close ups and long shots.
